Our return visit to the bandstand in Victoria Park, Hackney, was very different from the first visit earlier in the summer. That was a beautiful sunshiny day with lots of people enjoying the park.
This visit was Barnet Band’s last outdoor gig of the season – and far from being early in September it was so cold that it felt more like mid-November. Oh, and did I mention that it was raining too?
So it was to a small, hardy audience of people who’d remembered to put on their thermals before coming out that we played. An enthusiastic audience, they seemed to enjoy the selection of tunes we played for them. But when it started raining so hard that even they were leaving we curtailed the performance. We can’t have done too badly though – they want us back next year. It took several minutes with the car heater on before my hands and feet had thawed out enough to drive home!
Before the event the committee had agreed that the gig could be used as a fundraiser for the Foundation for Conductive Education. This is the charity being supported by one of the band members. We raised £24.12 towards her target, not so bad considering the small audience.
